On Repeat: October 2022

I really meant it when I said in September’s edition of On Repeat that my track selection would get darker the more into autumn and winter we get; because in October’s edition there are only three dance tracks! When it reaches mid-October, I tend to listen to a lot more grunge and rock than any other genre, it just feels like it fits the changing of the seasons. I’ll start with the three dance tracks and then discuss my other selections of grunge, metal and hardcore:

Tjade – Voyager (Marlon Hoffstadt AKA DJ Daddy Trance Remix) – The first dance selection for October is this trance number, Voyager, remixed by DJ Daddy Trance (otherwise known as Marlon Hoffstadt when he isn’t djing or producing under his trance alias, or previously known as Dansson when he formerly made house music belters such as Shake That from 2013). Originally by Netherlands based producer Tjade, the track was released in July this year on the four-track Voyager EP, including this remix, which boasts extended breaks and a high bpm alongside sparkling chords and acid trance interludes that unironically remind me somewhat of Darude’s Sandstorm. This is a great track of the new wave of trance-techno that has blown up this year.

Schak – Moving All Around (Jumpin’) (Feat. Kim English) – Next up and the second dance release for October is from North Shields newcomer Schak with his debut single Moving all Around (Jumpin’), released on fellow geordie Patrick Topping’s label, Trick. The track has been doing its rounds on social media both before and after release, in a video where Schak and friends invaded their local B&Q to host a kitchen sesh complete with decks and PA system, and other videos where they have been spotted on public transport including buses and the Newcastle Metro. The track is a complete party anthem, there hasn’t been a tech house track with this much wallop in a long time in my opinion, and the icing on the cake here is that it features vocal samples from the late, amazing, queen of house; Kim English.

Selker – Too Much For Me – The third and final dance track for October is up and coming scouse producer Selker’s Too Much For Me. This is another debut single, which first landed on Soundcloud last year and since its 1.6 million listens, has now been signed to huge label Warner Records and was officially released this July. Too Much For Me is a more modern, tempo-pushed take on the 2010 house mix of the 1995 Charlene Smith hit of the same name. What I can only imagine is relatively simple to do production wise, the tweaks and studio wizardry on Too Much For Me have certainly excelled it onto a path to become a timeless house classic for years to come. It has that really nice nostalgic house feel to it, like classic old school house. This is definitely the track I have had on repeat the most out of all of this month’s selections. It is an absolutely gorgeous track, I love it.

Melvins – Honey Bucket – Now its time for the rock picks. This is a song I found on one my spotify daily mixes and I’ve been obsessed with it. Melvins are a sludge metal grunge band, formed in Washington in 1983. Honey Bucket is from their 1993 album, Houdini and features a face screwing riff approximately one minute in. What drew me in initially were the vocals from Buzz Osborne that sound a lot like Metallica’s James Hetfield in the Garage Inc. era, right after the guitar work that is very Black Sabbath-esque. They never quite broke through the way they definitely should have done, but Honey Bucket and the rest of the Houdini proves that Melvins are one of the best kept secrets in metal.

Counterparts – Bound To The Burn – Canadian metalcore band Counterparts released their seventh album A Eulogy For Those Still Here on the 7th of October and I think it is definitely a contender for album of the year. My favourite song on there is Bound To The Burn, the third single released prior to the album, following the previous two singles, Unwavering Vow and Whispers Of Your Death. Bound To The Burn is a song about the pressures of making music for a living and the mental turbulence that comes with it, and features a bone-splintering breakdown and unrelenting drums.

Minerva – Deftones – Deftones are one of my favourite bands of all time and their music sounds like it was made perfectly for Autumn, or as I like to call it, Deftones season. I tend to listen to them more this time of year when the days are darker and shorter. One song I have had on repeat is Minerva from their self-titled album released in 2003. It has a heavy shoegaze influence throughout but is one Deftones’ more softer songs, a break from their usual heavy sound.

Alice in Chains – Rain When I Die – Another band I’m a sucker for this time of year are the great Alice in Chains. Rain When I Die is from their classic 1992 album Dirt which is one of the greatest albums of all time (fact, not opinion), and I also think this song in particular is one of the most underrated on the album. Frontman Layne Staley’s voice is at one of his best performances here, along with the guitar lick that just soothes the soul and utters out all emotion.

Joy Division – Interzone – I’ve recently finished reading Joy Division bassist Peter Hook’s book, Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division, and really enjoyed it. It is a really insightful book on the band and is full of interesting and funny anecdotes about them and what they got up to, as well as of course the delve into the album Unknown Pleasures and the stories and meaning behind the lyrics. I often listened to the album whilst reading the book (as recommended by Peter) and Interzone was the one song on the album that caught my attention on this particular day. This is one of few songs with Peter on vocals (as well as Ian Curtia) and is one of the less miserable sounding songs on Unknown Pleasures, it’s a song with a skip in its step.

Helmet – Like I Care – Helmet are a band I have recently discovered in the past few months and I’m really stoked to be writing about them and my new found love for them. I can’t remember ever hearing of them before which I’m surprised about because their music and sound is exactly the kind of post-hardcore rock music I love. Like I Care is from their 1997 Aftertaste album which got very poor reviews as far as I can see from my research. I haven’t listened to the album as a whole but if it is as bad as the critics say, I would be very surprised because I think this song rocks. It has a weighted bassline throughout alongside crashing drums and lyrics that sound very Deftones inspired by how suggestive and almost flirtatious they are. It’s your typical, late 90’s alternative rock. This song made me listen to their other works such as their 1994 album Betty, which is sick; I guess I should probably check out the rest of Aftertaste now too.

High Vis – Walking Wires – Finally, to wrap up October’s edition of On Repeat, I have selected a song from another band I have listened to a lot this past month or so. London-based post punk High Vis were at Outbreak this year and unfortunately I didn’t get to see them and hadn’t listened to them before, so I checked them out a couple of months ago and was absolutely kicking myself for not doing so earlier. They’re a really good band and I really like their song Walking Wires from their 2019 debut album No Sense No Feeling. Walking Wires was the first single before the album was released and has an absolutely stunning intro riff, met by pattering drums creating an 80’s style post punk sound.

That’s it for October, thank you for reading and be sure to check out all ten tracks, which have been added to The Ruthless Raver Spotify playlist below:

The Ruthless Raver: New Releases – Tekno Notice – TNVA01

This week’s new releases article delves into the darker side of techno, with Cheshire based record label Tekno Notice’s first ever release, compilation VA01 (various artists).

VA01 is a compilation release from some of the best, up and coming DJs and producers in the genre, showcasing their surreal talent for production as well the ability to cook up a storm with a mix.

After what began as a mix series throughout lockdown, now turned underground record label launched and ran by avid techno fan and DJ Liam Davies (Aka DAV), Tekno Notice now has over 45 guest mixes from fellow DJs and techno fans including Will Catlin, Con Parker, Emily Knight, Jack Rylatt and Azyr to name a few.

The label, who’s logo and name was inspired by the infamous Nike TN trainers and logo, is set to release the compilation Friday the 23rd of July, with its premier launching on Soundcloud today. It includes ten original tracks of hard and fast, full throttle techno from artists from both the UK and beyond, including DAV himself, Azyr, EA, Evis May & Mattram, Faster Horses, Ketek, Mergim, RAMKKA, Sawyl and REGFOY. Conveniently enough, as it’s release date falls on the first weekend of the clubs reopening, it is the perfect soundtrack to calm the pre rave nerves and get you hyped for the triumphant return to a hot and sweaty dancefloor, and to prepare for the ruckus about to occur.

The vision of the label is to solidify the North West of England’s place in the techno scene and make a name for itself to be ranked among the likes of Berlin and Amsterdam in terms of its musical offerings. With the tracks on offer featured in the first compilation, there is no doubt in my mind they will do just that. Expect wall shaking techno of a high bpm wild enough to blow your socks off; this is not for the faint hearted.

Grooves On The Vinyl: #000

For a while now I have been thinking to myself, “what else can I write about on my blog?”, “how else can I engage more people from the music community?”, “what will be a really cool thing to write about?”. Then I had a eureka moment a few weeks ago – I can write about my record collection!

So without further ado, I am stoked to announce my new blog series, Grooves On The Vinyl, where I will be taking you through each piece of wax in my ever-growing record collection, and discussing each release in full and reviewing the album and EP’s and talking about my favourite tracks on each, as well the background of the artists and the making of the albums.

I have probably over 50 so far and it’s only getting bigger. I have records from all different genres of music including techno, house, pop punk, metal, rap and hip hop, film scores and so many more. Those who follow my Instagram page will have seen I do post pictures of my records on there and I still will, but this time there will be more to read on the blog for those who want to learn about the music and the artists and hopefully discover more music to love. I’ll also be discussing my favourite record stores and the best places to buy online.

The setup I have is a Pioneer PLX-500 turntable in black with DM-40 speakers of the same colour from the same well known DJ equipment brand. I used to use an Ion Pure LP player with some cheap ass speakers my mum bought me from Maplins around seven years ago when I first started the collection. The sound and play quality overall was just rubbish – my records are my babies so it was about time last Christmas that I upgrade to the set up I use now, which was a great decision. The quality of the PLX-500 is amazing and the sound quality on the DM-40s is perfect, so crisp and clear and does every record justice. I only use one of the speakers currently because I’m still waiting to get a Kallax unit from Ikea for better storage space – I don’t have enough room to use both at the moment and the turntable itself lives on top of its original box on my bedroom floor for now.

Stay tuned for the first post!

The Ruthless Raver: New Releases – Lexx – Marcia EP

This week’s article takes a look at Belgium based DJ, producer and promoter Lexx’s debut release, Marcia, his EP out on the 9th of July on Cheshire based label, Revolucion Records.

Over the past several years, Lexx has spent this time growing and excelling as a DJ, and is known for showering a dancefloor with deep tech house beats. Unsurprisingly, his commitment and ambition have seen him play worldwide festivals including Tomorrowland and Burning Man, as well as destinations across Europe including Tel Aviv and London. And it doesn’t stop there – as Lexx also throws his own events called “ON” in his Brussels hometown.

Since taking to producing his own tracks, the Marcia EP is Lexx’s first ever release. Consisting of two tracks, the titular Marcia and Trajan, the EP is one of deep melodic house glory. The opening track Marcia has tribal like sounds and vocal samples layered with a deep transfixing groove, whereas the second track Trajan (my favourite of the two) is a bit faster and more upbeat, with a lot more intensity. Both are wonderfully atmospheric tracks perfect for a big venue or festival.

About The Label

Launched in 2007, UK based label Revolucion Records class themselves as “Purveyors of underground house and techno”, with the greatest, more unknown hidden artists signed to the label. Releasing music specifically for a dancefloor, their A&R searches for and signs artists from across the globe, including North & South America, North Africa, Europe and the UK, uniting the artists and listeners on a worldwide basis. Over this time they have achieved and are still achieving growth as a label and business, with now over 180 releases, including artist albums, compilations and artist samplers.

Pre-order Lexx – Marcia now, available to buy and stream from Friday the 9th of July:

British Underground House Producer JY Akari Releases New Track – Movements with UK Producer Algoithm

On the 23rd April this year, UK based house producer JY Akari released his latest single, Movements, co-produced with fellow UK producer, Algoithm on Dutch label CHAPTERD Recordings.

Having had several releases over the last few years, JY Akari has also been supported throughout 2020 and 2021 so far by no other than BBC Introducing. Both JY Akari and Algoithm are self-taught producers and to be supported and pushed by the BBC is evident that their craft is paying off and they are on the road to developing into successful artists and producers. The only way is up for the two of them.

The pair first met through the CHAPTERD recordings group chat after having both already released on the label, and shortly after discovered they lived in Corby and Bedford; less than an hour away from each other. The signs they should collaborate together were right in front of them. The two of them also participated in CHAPTERD live sessions, an online label showcase and virtual rave, representing the UK for the Netherlands based label. JY Akari also went on to represent the UK at the HUSTLE lockdown virtual rave in Austria last summer, which was his first online event of the pandemic.

CHAPTERD as a label was founded by Dutch DJ and producer, MVLDER, who is a close personal friend of JY Akari’s, after meeting on Twitter several years ago when they both ran music blogs before JY Akari began producing and MVLDER founded CHAPTERD. The two then also collaborated on the track “So Into You” released on 3000 Bass. JY Akari and MVLDER then assisted each other by releasing eight tracks in 2020 on CHAPTERD, to both promote JY Akari’s production and promote the label to each other’s followers.

Movements takes its inspiration from super-funky, high energy tech house the world knows and loves. The creation and production of the track was simple: a bassline and some drums. Movements remained dormant and unfinished for quite some time. That was until Algoithm came into the picture. He saw the potential of the basic production and added something just as simple (yet classic) – piano. This then sent their musical imaginations into overdrive and the surged the creative flow. The finishing touch was the vocal loop, and Movements was then finally born.

The track was then given a new lease of life after being heard and loved by CHAPTERD Recordings who then signed it and released it shortly after on the 23rd April this year. As the title would suggest, Movements is going places, with over seven thousand streams on Spotify and Soundcloud combined. Very best of luck to the two of them for future releases!

Since the release of Movements, JY Akari has also released his first EP of 2021, Let You Go / 2 AM, a two track EP of tech house party anthems.

A Freshly Rebranded Blog

So I’ve finally started to blog again. I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time now, for over a year at least, but just never got round to it and I was struggling to find things to write about. I kept putting it off but now I feel like its finally time and that I’m ready to do this now. I said 2020 was going to be my year but then Coronavirus happened so I guess I’ll try again next near. But for now, I can focus on this. I’m working from home now and due to lock down I can’t go anywhere or see anyone, so what better time than now for me to start again? I finally have the time for it. As if it took a global pandemic for me to actually sit down and do it.

I’ve always considered myself a great writer and started my old blog a few years ago when I did a couple of reviews on skincare products and stuff because I thought it would just be an easy way to kick it off. Truth be told, I never really had a great interest for what I was writing about which is probably why I wrote about three posts and then stopped. I just didn’t take myself seriously enough and then lost interest because I wasn’t writing about things I really wanted to write about. I’ve really got a great passion for writing, cinema, and music and probably lots of other things too but they are the main things that stand out to me. So I thought you know what, why not combine all three and put it into my blog?

I had a tough year last year and certain things have knocked me and my confidence and that’s made me not want to write either. Then when I wanted to I kept finding that I just kept making excuses, saying, “yeah I’ll start my blog soon” “I’ll do it next week” “I’ll do it after I’ve done this”. I don’t want to be like that anymore. I feel like I have so much to say and so much I am really passionate about that I want to put into words on a platform for people to read so I can share it with other people too. For now, this is just a hobby but if I can orientate any future work around it that would be even better.

I’ve decided to re start my blog all together from scratch so I can really focus on what I want to write about and also to improve my writing skills. I struggle with anxiety a lot too (even more so now because of COVID-19 and the cabin fever is starting to get to me), so it helps me to get everything down on paper (or in this case online). Social media is the devil and I cant seem to get off my phone, ever, and I want to try and stop the habit. I do really enjoy writing and I find its a massive distraction that really helps me when I want to forget about any bad thoughts feelings or if I’m having a bad day I’ll plan in my head something I want to write because I can take all the negative energy and project it into something positive and actually make something productive out of it. Two birds one stone eh.

So in terms of things I’ll be posting, I really want to start reviewing again so I’ll review films, albums, EP’s and possibly do a few write ups on events I go to such as raves, gigs etc. I don’t want to say I’m only going to be posting those because its very specific and I know I already have ideas of posts in my head of things I want to write about, completely unrelated to those, or that don’t fit that structure. I’m just going to write about anything that I get an idea on. However given the new title of  this blog (yes I know its cringe but taking into considering I love techno and my name is Ruth I’d say its a good play on words), I do want to mainly try and focus on music related posts. That, and cinema are my two main loves in life. I’ve been brought up around both my whole life and they play such a big part of my life now that I owe enough credit to them to concentrate my writing solely on them. Given everything that’s going on in the world, I’m hoping I can provide a real morale boost for anyone who needs it, via these two topics, or anything else.

I hope you enjoyed reading this first post and I cant wait to share more with you.

Ruth xxx
